Is it necessary to have both a video capture card and a firewire cable to transfer video from a digital camera to a pc?

On the cyberfilmschool website there is an article detailing how to edit on a pc and seems to say that you need both. However when I called up a shop to find out about price the guy told me I don't need a video capture card, just the firewire card. He says that a video cpature card is only for 8mm, Hi8, VHS, etc..... and not for DV.

    Is this true?

    True.

But your cam must have DV-in capability to dump back to tape.

Many mini-dv camcorders have i-link(IEEE 1394)so all you need to buy is a firewire cable and a capture card to connect to a computer. The problem arises when you buy a digital camcorder that doesn't have 1394. So then you have to buy a video capture card that doesn't use firewire. There are a few out there. You can check out the latest edition of Computer Videomaker to see which are in your prize range.
